Can Facebook’s Zuckerberg determine fake news?

Why is Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, trying to stop fake news now? It is interesting he came out with this after the Nov 2016 Presidential elections. Seems very convenient. For a long time, all Internet-related companies were saying that you cannot control what happens on the Internet; but now Zuckerberg is saying there is ‘fake news’. Can anyone filter out what is true from what is false.

The question is: Who is has the authority to say what is fake and what is true? As soon as people try to define which opinions are true and what are false, there will be trouble and disagreements. When opinions are related to public and current affairs, they can get very heated, i.e., the presidential elections. Accusations of lying were flying from both directions. Some were true and some were not. But even truth can still be convenient truth, and sometimes, truth can never be objectively determined. If this is so, then how can news be determined as fake or true?

The Apostle Paul said in Ephesians 4:25 – Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

We need truth in the public sphere. This can be a difficult thing to actually have because we are imperfect human beings and our opinions can all be skewed and one-sided.
